We Are Changing How We Choose Our Causes

As a new organisation, last year was about getting started and seeing how things worked.  Carol chose the first charity to support during January/February and from then on walkers who came along were able to nominate a charity for each two month period.  This allowed us to raise money for six brilliant charities, namely: MS Research, The Eve Appeal, Brain Tumour Research, MacMillan Nurses, The British Heart Foundation and The Salvation Army. We also pledged £1 for the Woodland Trust from each £3 received when walking up at Heartwood and raised money for St John Ambulance through our First Aid Evenings. In all we raised over $4,000 for these organisations in 2011.

However, as the number of walkers has grown it has become more difficult to pick out just six organisations when there are so many that need our support, so we felt a change of approach was needed. It has been decided that this year we will still raise money for six charities but will give our regular walkers (those who walk on at least 24 walks (the equivalent of walking at least twice a month) with us during 2012) the opportunity to put forward their chosen charity to go into a draw that will take place in January 2013. Get Fit and Give’s charity for 2012 will be Chrohn’s Society and the Rose & Crown Pub (our base in Sandrige) have pledged support for the PDSA.  The four other beneficiaries will come from the draw of walkers’ nominations at the end of the year. We will continue to pledge £1 from each walk at Heartwood to the Woodland Trust.
